New to the Surf educational team this year is tuba instructor Neal Chiprean. Neal holds his Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree from Slippery Rock University in western Pennsylvania. While in college, he performed as principal tubist in a number of ensembles, including orchestra, marching pride, wind ensemble, brass band, tuba/euphonium ensemble, and tuba quartet. During that time, he also performed as a soloist in numerous master classes with famed artists such as Patrick Sheridan, Lauren Veronie, and Ryan McGeorge, as well as in 2010 at the Western PASSHE Low Brass Consortium. In 2011, Neal performed as bass trombonist with the SRU Jazz Ensemble at the PMEA convention in Hershey, PA, as well as with guest artist Wayne Bergeron. That spring, Neal was asked to perform on tuba in a jazz nonet with members of the SRU music faculty as they put on a live recreation of Miles Davis’s “Birth of the Cool”.
Neal has worked with several western PA schools as an arranger, drill designer, and instructor, including Slippery Rock High School, Quaker Valley High School, Karns City High School, Moniteau High School, and Deer Lakes High School. Currently, Neal serves as the director of bands at Columbiana High School in Columbiana, Ohio, where he teaches all bands, grades 5-12, high school choir, and music appreciation.
Neal’s passion for music and drum corps was likely inspired through his father, Bob, a 17-year drum corps veteran and music educator. In 2007, Neal marched with the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps as a member of the contra line. After several injuries the following years, he was gratefully able to return to the Bluecoats in 2010, aging-out as assistant conductor. Neal is excited to be serving his first year on staff with the Jersey Surf Drum & Bugle Corps.
