Jersey Surf Announces 2016 Color Guard Staff

The Jersey Surf World Class Drum Corps is excited to announce our extraordinarily talented color guard staff for the 2016 season. With well over a century of combined experience, the Jersey Surf is honored to welcome some of the most accomplished performers and educators from across the country to lead the 2016 color guard. This word-class team will work extensively with the Jersey Surf color guard in the areas of movement, equipment, and physical training in preparation for the 2016 production, “Ebb & Flow.” The staff’s honed expertise will allow performers to flourish in their skills and bring the Jersey Surf to new heights as we travel across the country on the Drum Corps International Summer Tour. Meet the team below to get a sneak peek at our 2016 staff members!

Erin Leifer

Returning for her third year with Jersey Surf, Erin will be assuming a new role as Color Guard Caption Head! Erin began marching DCI with the Crossmen in 2003 before spending three years with the Phantom Regiment in 2004, 2006, and 2007. After marching, Erin discovered her love of teaching and spent the last 8 summer seasons doing just that. She taught the Colts color guard from 2008-2009 and served as the Lead Guard Instructor for Spirit of Atlanta from 2010-2013. During the winter, Erin spent 11 seasons with Black Watch Winter Guard from 2004-2014. Nine of those seasons she was a marching member, serving 2 as captain, and 2 years as a staff member. Erin currently lives with her fiancé and husky puppies in Cobb County, GA where she teaches sixth grade math and the Kell High School Marching Band and Indoor Colorguard Programs.

Matt Hurley

Matt Hurley is an experienced designer and technician in the marching arts. Matt started his career in the with the Bayonne Kidets at the age of 8, before marching Bridgemen, Sunrisers, and Emerald Marquis. He has been working with various New Jersey drum corps and winter guards for over a decade, including serving as the designer and caption head for Jersey Surf, the Hawthorne Caballeros, the Black Watch, and AMP.

Kimberly Kinden

Kimmy is excited to be back on staff for the 2016 season! Kimmy was a member of the Jersey Surf color guard for six years, three of which she served as captain. After aging out in 2013, she was excited to return in 2014 and 2015 on the instructional staff. Her other color guard experience includes 5 seasons with Field of View winter guard, including their transition from open class to world class, 5 years as a member of the West Chester University Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band, and 2 years as a member of The Black Watch winter guard.

Daniel Matos

Daniel will be returning to color guard staff for his third full season. He comes to us originally from Long Island New York, where he fell in love with the activity during his years as a part of the Walt Whitman High School marching band and Saturday Matinee winter guard. After marching in 3 different DCA corps from 2002-2010, he has spent the past few years teaching tri-state area high school color guards including Port Chester, North Plainfield, Ramsey, and Westfield. He loves being able to share his immense passion for the activity with so many different children, and watch his students progress and grow under his direction. Daniel always says that the most rewarding part of his life is getting to watch his “kids” take the field/floor and perform their hearts out, and knowing that he got to be a part of that moment.

In the summer of 2013 he was asked to come on the road with surf for a week as a flag tech. That was one of the most amazing weeks of his life and made him fall in love with the corps and everything that they are about. Daniel is very excited to start working with the 2016 Surf color guard and hopes to continue teaching here for many years to come.

Kristy Beohmer

Kristy is very excited to rejoin the Jersey Surf family as a staff member this year. She previously marched with Jersey Surf as a member of the colorguard from 2007 – 2010. She then marched with The Cadets in 2011 and aged out with them in 2012. She was also a marching member of the Black Watch indoor colorguard for 7 years, serving as captain in 2014 and 2015. Kristy graduated from Stockton University in 2014 with a degree in psychology and has recently returned to Stockton in pursuit of her graduate degree in occupational therapy. She currently teaches the colorguard programs at Washington Township High School.

Chris Farley

Christopher Farley began his colorguard career as a choreographer and technician in his senior year of high school, teaching local programs around the Houston, Texas area. His drum corps journey began in 2007 with The Phantom Regiment Colorguard where he marched until 2010. During those years he was also performing with the Oak Ridge High School Winterguard (2007, 2008) and with Code Black Independent Winterguard (2009, 2010). In the fall of 2010, Chris moved to Atlanta to become one of the founding cast members of Paramount Independent World. In the six years Chris has lived in Atlanta, he has performed with a variety of groups such as dance companies, a touring performance art rock band, and many different performance art groups. Many of these organizations raise money for multiple local and international charities.

Marcus Onezime

Marcus J. Onezime is currently studying at Kennesaw State University where he plans to obtain his BA in Modern Dance. He has performed in the drum corps activity with Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, World Class Finalist, (2013) and The Concord Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, World Class Champion, (2014). He has also performed in WGI with Paramount Winter Guard in 2013 and 2014. During his second season with Paramount, where he was the featured dance soloist, the ensemble finished the season in 7th place at WGI Finals.

Marcus has had the privilege of working with guard programs such as Houston HS (Germantown, TN), Terry HS (Terry, MS), Richland MS (Richland, MS), Sprayberry HS, Jackson Academy (Jackson, MS), Mill Creek HS and most recently River Ridge HS where he served as a dance technician and choreographer. Currently, Marcus resides in Suwanee, GA where he holds the position of Colorguard Director at Chattahoochee Highschool in Johns Creek, GA. He is extremely excited to be joining the guard staff with Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps as a movement technician during the 2016 season.

Justin Sullivan
Justin is a native of Gainesville, FL. Currently, he resides in Austin, TX where he is the Color Guard Director at Cedar Park HS and an Assistant Director at Round Rock HS.

While in Florida , Justin was the Director of the Santa Fe HS Auxiliary Programs and the Assistant Director of Color Guards at Allen D. Nease HS. Under his direction, these color guards received superior ratings and the Nease color guards earned finalist positions in all three WGI classes, A, Open, and World. In 2014, Justin moved to Austin, TX and started teaching at East View HS and Round Rock HS. In March of 2014, the East View winter guard earned the school’s first state championship from the Texas Color Guard Circuit and the Round Rock guard placed 5th at WGI World Championships Scholastic Open Finals.

Justin was a member of Northeast Independent World Guard in 2009. He has been active in the DCI community as a member of the Spirit of Atlanta colorguard in 2008 and 2009 and ended his marching career with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps Colorguard in 2010. Justin was the 2010 DCI I&E Flag Champion. He was on the faculty of the World Class Finalist Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps from 2011-2013.

Stacy Andrews

Stacy Andrews works as a Benefits Outreach Specialist at Benefits Data Trust in Philadelphia, PA. She is originally from Bridgewater, NJ and attended Bridgewater-Raritan High School where she participated in the marching band and indoor guard from 2003-2007. After high school she went to West Chester University where she marched in the band from 2008-2011 and graduated in 2012 with a bachelors degree in Nutrition and Dietetics with a minor in Exercise Science. Independent marching experience includes Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps 2006-2009, Phantom Regiment 2010-2011 and Black Watch Indoor Guard 2009-2010 and 2012-2015 . Stacy has been teaching the Jersey Surf Colorguard since 2012, currently teaches Radnor High School and Haverford High School and has worked with Bridgewater-Raritan High School in the past. She is also a founding director and designer for Main Line Independent winterguard from Wayne, Pa.

Laura Saad

Laura is excited to return to the Jersey Surf for her second year instructing the color guard! Her marching experience includes 2 years at the Jersey Surf (2009-2010) and 4 years at the Carolina Crown (2011-2014). Laura also participated in WGI, performing with the Black Watch from 2010-2012. Her teaching experience includes 4 seasons with the AMP winter guard as well as various marching bands in the NJ/PA area. Laura graduated with a degree in psychology and currently lives in Philadelphia working as a research assistant and psychometrist at the University of Pennsylvania.

Steph Broadbelt

Stephanie is proud to still be involved with Jersey Surf after starting as a marching member ten years ago. She spent five summers as a member of the color guard, serving as captain in 2009 and 2010, and returned to the color guard staff in 2012 after aging out of DCI. She is grateful for the opportunity to be on staff for her fifth year and continue to share her love for the activity and this drum corps. Her other color guard experience includes the Phantom Regiment, six seasons with Black Watch winter guard, and four years as a part of the marching band at West Chester University. Stephanie currently lives in Glenside, PA with her handsome boyfriend and some crazy cats, works in South Jersey and teaches color guard at Hatboro-Horsham High School.

Morgan Carter

With over a decade of experience in the marching arts, Morgan is excited to return to the Jersey Surf and give back to the members. Her marching experience includes Raiders (2006-2009), Jersey Surf (2010-2011), Phantom Regiment (2012-2014), Emanon Winter Guard (2010-2011), and Black Watch Winter Guard (2012-2014, 2016). Morgan recently graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She will be starting her nursing career this summer at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
